Salmon Fishing Hippa Island

Orca Nesto

It’s sunny in Haida Gwaii and not the misty kind of Queen Charlotte Sunshine we have grown to love over the years, but actual Vitamin D kind! As our new fleet of guests start to follow the afternoon fishmaster out of the mouth of Nesto Inlet, all boats came to a dead stop as a pod of over a dozen or more Orcas started to enter Nesto Inlet. They were everywhere, it was an amazing sight.

Once they had safely passed our entire fleet of 7 boats, we continued the introductory orientation of Hippa Island and explained the new rules of the Heritage Site of Hippa Island to continue out of the South Passage to start our fishing adventure!  The bottom fishing has been extremely productive as usual. However, for the first time in years, bait is scarce and the salmon are being slightly elusive. So for the last few trips the hunting has been a humbling reality of the actual sport of fishing and not the constant releasing of dozens of salmon a day that we have become accustomed to.The Salmon are still here and we have had some epic battles and lots more to come, so please stay tuned…
